The Mosaic Dance Festival is inviting choreographers to submit applications to participate in this year’s performance. On Sunday, December 1st at 7:30 pm, Broadway Dance Center will host The Mosaic Dance Festival, a popular annual festival that explores the intersections between all genres of dance with the music, rhythms, and stylizations of the Indian subcontinent. This evening of rich creative experimentation is truly a celebration of International Movement.
The Mosaic Dance Festival is the creation of Kalamandir Dance Company, a Contemporary Indian Dance Ensemble dedicated to using the vocabulary of classical Indian dance in communication with global movement vernacular to realize their artistic vision. The company strives to enrich its classical foundations with other dance traditions. Drawing from Odissi, Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Capoeira, Flamenco, Middle Eastern, African, Modern and Ballet, the collective is driven by their passionate commitment to looking at what unifies us all.
What we are looking for:
Original choreography, in any genre, inspired by the music, rhythms, and stylizations of the Indian subcontinent. Some of the possible ways this cross cultural exploration can occur include:
1. Utilizing music of the Indian subcontinent (we have an extensive music library, if references or suggestions are needed)
2. Utilization of poetry, text, audio, language, sound-scapes, etc. from the Indian subcontinent
3. Have a cool innovative idea? We are definitely open and excited about possibilities. Tell us about it in your application.
**We are also seeking dance of the Indian Subcontinent inspired by global music, rhythms, and stylizations. If you are an artist working with movement from the region, we are interested in featuring your work. Some of the possible ways that the cross cultural exploration The Mosaic Dance Festival is seeking can happen include (but are not limited to):
1. Jugalbandi-like experimentation between different movement styles/vocabularies
2. Setting traditional movement styles to non-traditional music, sounds, text, audio, etc.
3. Incorporating movement not from the Indian subcontinent into one’s work
4. If you have another idea, we are definitely open. Tell us about it in your application
Applications must include:
1. Choreographer’s contact information: name, address, phone number, and email
2. Choreographer’s bio (250 words or less)
3. Written choreographic proposal. Please include a descriptive proposal that includes a discussion on how you envision your work fulfilling the intention of The Mosaic Dance Festival. Be sure to include the length of the work to be presented at the festival and the number of dancers. Dances should be no less than 2 minutes and no longer than 12 minutes.
4. Web link to a 5-10 minute video sample of a previous work.
